Dead Man's Hollow

Dead Man's Hollow in McKeesport is the largest privately owned conservation area in Allegheny County, and is the property of Allegheny Land Trust. We headed there on a clear, unseasonably warm day to check out the famous ruins.  The Union Sewer Pipe Co. made clay sewer pipes on this site, and their boiler house burned down in 1925. The walls still remain, festooned with graffiti, and there are lots of other bits and pieces of their operations to be found in the woods. Dead Man's Hollow gets its colorful name from folklore, and if you attempt to find out who the dead man might be, you will probably find a different story for each source you discover. In October they held a ghost hunt here, so perhaps they received yet another story from the spirit realm. We wanted to much to go! But it was 18+ only, and it wouldn't have been half as fun without our Jasper. The park is right next to the Great Allegheny Passage, so visitors can explore the woods to their hearts' content or stroll along the  lovely Youghiogheny River.
