Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors

Detail from the peep-in room of "Dots Obsession- Love Transformed Into Dots".
Yayoi Kusama's "Infinity Mirrors" traveling exhibit is headed to Cleveland. This will be its closest stop to Pittsburgh. We traveled to Seattle to see it last summer, and I took these pictures. I hope they will help to capture a glimpse of why Kusama is a superstar, both in her native Japan and well beyond. Ticket sales for nonmembers go on sale tomorrow.

There are two permanent installations of Kusama's work at Pittsburgh's Mattress Factory. A surprising number of people from Washington DC and Toronto are turning up there lately to see these works, because their interest was piqued when the exhibit came through their home towns but they were unable to get tickets. While the installations at the Mattress Factory are definitely neat, they don't compare to the complexity of the works in this traveling exhibit. I was able to photograph almost everything, except her iconic "All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins". A visitor at the Hirshhorn Museum in DC broke an $80,000 pumpkin while posing for a selfie, so no more of those!

Kusama's works are often immersive experiences. She creates environments that totally surround the viewer. Multiple mirrors and repetitive motifs such as polka dots of varying sizes help to create a trippy alternate reality where depth and distance are hard to judge. They are lots of fun.
