Rock City

Rock City Park in Olean, NY is a fun place to visit. It's the world's largest quartz conglomerate in the world, and it's a fascinating landscape to explore on the many trails that wind through the park.
The rocks formed about 320 million years ago.  Quartz that had been eroded into smooth pebbles by glaciers, were washed away as the glaciers melted and were scattered into the bed of a shallow sea. Over the eons, this layer was buried, and compression created a conglomerate rock with countless small quartz pebbles mixed into it.   Flowing water forced the rocks apart and erosion exposed them to create the twisting passageways and towering formations that exist today.
